Traded the M3 in on a new Prius (2007, black, Package 6). Will post impressions later, but so far, it's ZOMG awesome.

You lost over half your power / weight ratio, and it's ZOMG awesome?

It's awesome on a different axis =)

It's a great car so far, very practical, and all the high tech crap in it -- the nav system, keyless start, bluetooth phone integration, mp3 cd changer, etc. -- is just so, so nice.

I'll probably get another sports car in a year or two when I see something I really want, but realistically I need to be in a house with a bigger garage before I do that.

I do love nav systems. I've been a Garmin customer for years. It's particularly useful if you live in a city with insane streets. Friday I had to go downtown for jury duty, and I took the T rather than driving because there's no courthouse parking and public parking's expensive. The courthouse was about 300 meters from the State street stop. I spent about 15 minutes wandering around repeatedly in different wrong directions before I found it, because I had such a hard time matching the map to what I was actually seeing.

It turns out that "Cambridge St" on the map was either "State" or "Court" street where I was, depending on which side of Congress you're on. "Court" doesn't become "Cambridge" for another 150m. I won't talk about "blocks" because the term is meaningless in downtown Boston, since all blocks are completely random in size, shape and orientation. The Superior Court is not on Court street, though that was in fact the way I was supposed to walk. There was a peculiar three-way intersection on the map, but while I encountered one with much the same shape, it wasn't the same intersection. Y-shaped intersections are in fact quite common downtown.

In short, in downtown Boston it would have been handy to have a GPS just walking.

As for the other stuff - it doesn't sound all that interesting to me. The only thing I'd actually use would be the keyless start.

One noticable difference between the Prius and other cars is the instant torque you are able to get when starting out. Now, I've not driven very many "performance" cars, but when I drove the Prius, it had some of the fastest acceleration of any car I remember driving. Granted, you don't get that feeling of being slowly pushed back in your seat as you go up the power curve, so you might miss that. Instead, you're pushed back in your seat from the get go and held there (kinda like riding the Hulk down at Universal).

If you've got a Toyota dealership close by, go ahead and take a test drive and see if you agree. It may not rattle the windows, but it can definitely get off the line quickly.

The torque from the electric motor is MUCH higher than its HP, and as docx said, it's something you can feel right off the line. The Prius is getting a scratch fixed (dealer made the scratch) so I have a Corolla loaner, and while the Corolla isn't a fast car it has a 100% gas engine and I feel a significant amount of lag off the line vs. the Prius.

M3's warranty was almost out, and the car had enough small things going wrong with it that I wasn't comfortable driving it sans warranty. An extended warranty + required maintenance for 2 more years was $4100. For that price, I figured I'd buy a new car.

I also needed a 4 door now that my kids are school age.

Take those two, and then my generally hippie like nature, and the Prius made sense.

I think you just like buying new cars. How many have you purchased in the last 10 years? The truck, the M3, and now the Prius? I have no idea how long you had the Viper.

Oh, I've owned a lot of cars, and I do enjoy new cars, but a lot of the reasons I get new ones are tied to reality.

1995 Chevy Blazer => Porsche 928S4. Moved from mountains into the city, so an SUV wasn't necessary any more.

Porsche 928S4 => Acura TL. The Porsche was dying on me with really strange electrical issues and I had to move. Car was in the shop 3 months before I moved, told them to sell it.

Acura TL => Volvo Wagon (V70 XC). Girlfriend had a kid, needed something a bit more practical.

Volvo Wagon => Viper. New wife had a Volvo already, I wanted a sports car.

Viper => F150. Kids on the way, Viper was a death trap, needed a truck for new house out in the hills.

F150 => M3. F150 was about out of warranty, didn't need a truck anymore, wanted something sporty but capable of carrying 4 people.

M3 => Prius. M3 was about out of warranty, needed a 4 door.

I don't like driving vehicles that are out of warranty, that's a given. But we've kept our Odyssey we've had for 5 years, and it's been solid (and I got an extended warranty at a competitive price). It will likely be traded in for a new Sienna once its warranty expires.

Average car ownership period is about 2 years for me. I had the M3 around 3 years. The Viper I had a little under 2 years. Most other cars lasted 1-2 years.

"Out of warranty" has never bothered me much. Typically, I'll drive a car until it hits 100K miles, which by rule of thumb is where you start getting concerned about major wear. I've owned my Supra for 9 years now, and don't have any immediate plans to replace it.

You do know you're spending a lot of money on depreciation by replacing your cars every 1-2 years, right? While some cars (notably Civics and similar cars) generally have a market value that's linear with time and wear, most cars have a definite curve where most of the value drop occurs in the first couple of years of ownership. Since this usually isn't accompanied by an actual decrease in reliability, it's a lot more cost efficient to hold a car a lot longer than that.
